H.M. Queen Elizabeth II Indoor Street Party Meeting

Notices

Enid gave a warm welcome to all who were attending the Indoor Street Party., the weather forecast was for it to be unsettled, so what a good job our indoor party was indoors!

There will be no Open Meeting in August, but some of our interest groups may take advantage of the better weather and meet up; cycling and metal detecting group are two which have expressed an interest to do so.

Group News

A new group specifically for the men is planned. It is the Grumpy Old Men Group, a sign-up sheet was available and all men were encouraged to put their names down. An initial meeting will be arranged in due course and the agenda for future meetings and events will be set by those attending the group.

Andy Mudd-Wingham is happy to facilitate a Metal Detecting Group and meetings have been held at The White Lion, Bury and the Jolly Sailor Ramsey. All interested parties are welcome to join our next meeting at ‘The White Lion’ Bury.

Unfortunately, the Bird Watching Group has disbanded but thanks go to Val for her efforts to try and keep the group going.

Details of the groups at St Ives U3A were available should anyone be interested in joining those groups.

Nina concluded by saying that the Ramsey Gardening Club is planning a trip to RHS Wisley on 11th September, and that Yvonne Wright or Lesley Owen are the contacts if you wish to go. £18 for R&D Garden Club members and £20 for non-members. Coach pick-up times 8.00am at Clock tower, 08.05am from Burtons garage.

Competition

H.M. Queen Elizabeth II Indoor Street Party 12 July 2016

As the 71 guests entered the hall, they could clearly see the 12 tables laden with food, flags and empty plates and paper cups. Also, for each table was a picture quiz, of personalities and royal questions, which had to be answered as the afternoon progressed. On the screen, a slide show played, which portrayed the years of the Queen’s life from the 1920’s to the present day – complete with music.

Food was then served, with tea, coffee and a home-made fruit punch, the table quiz continued, to be joined by an individual quiz, which was set by Sheila Gilbert-Hill, based on more facts from the Queen’s Reign, some twenty questions in all.

The table quiz included the identification of Prime Ministers, the Queen’s grandchildren, the Archbishops of Canterbury and the Queen’s official and private residences.

The quizzes were marked towards the end of the session and our congratulations to the winning table and individual winners.

The afternoon concluded with a ‘sing along’, the keyboard being played by David Cusworth and the words appearing on the screen. The tunes included; Tea for two (1920), Leaning on a lamp post (1930), White cliffs of dover (1940), Tulips from Amsterdam (1950), When I’m sixty-four (1960), Teach the world to sing (1970), Love is all around (1980), I just called to say I love you (1990) and You raise me up (2000).

The afternoon concluded with ‘There always be an England’, ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, followed by the ‘National Anthem’

Enid then closed the meeting by offering our thanks to the Queen for her outstanding efforts and perseverance.

Future Open Meetings

Our next Open Meeting will take place on Tuesday 12th September at the Community Centre, starting at 2.00pm. The speaker will be lido Lopez Cardozo-Kindersley and her subject ‘Stone carving’.

BOOK SWAP Margaret Thornton will be operating a “Book Swap” A box will be available for members to bring books and swap them for others. No payment is involved but we would ask members not to bring lots of books at any one time. If books remain “unswapped” in the box for more than a couple of meetings, they will be donated to Charity shops.

Jokes/Puns:

A Scotsman and his wife walked past a swanky new restaurant. “Did you smell that food?” she asked. “It smells absolutely incredible!”

Being a kind-hearted scot, he thought “What the heck………I’ll treat her!”

So they walked past it again!
